FAQ

What is TGARR?

The Great American River Race (TGARR) is an endurance run from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico (or the Gulf of America, depending on your politics). Crews race the river itself in budget boats, relying on grit, ingenuity, and whatever holds together long enough to float.

How long is the course?

The race runs roughly 1,700 miles, following the mighty Mississippi River all the way to the Gulf.

What kind of boats can race?

Any boat can race—as long as it’s acquired and prepared for $5,000 or less (safety gear excluded). This cap keeps the competition fair, the creativity high, and the results wildly entertaining. Expect everything from patched-up fishing rigs to deeply questionable pontoons.

Why the $5,000 limit?

Because ingenuity is more fun than money. Anyone can throw cash at a problem, but TGARR rewards creativity, resourcefulness, and clever repairs made on the fly.

What safety rules are in place?

Safety is non-negotiable. Every boat must carry proper equipment—life preservers, fire extinguishers, radios, anchors, navigation lights, etc.—but these costs don’t count toward the $5,000 budget cap. The river is dangerous, and participants are expected to respect it.

Can I bring spare parts?

Yes, but they count toward the $5,000 budget if they’re part of your boat setup. Freebies, hand-me-downs, or “it was lying in my garage” don’t cut it—everything has a real market value.

How long do we have to finish?

Teams must complete the course in 8 days or less to officially finish the race. That means long runs, smart fuel strategies, and quick repairs. Sleep is optional.

What happens if my boat breaks down?

That’s part of the adventure. Teams can attempt repairs themselves or try to source parts along the way, but relying too heavily on marinas’ timetables could sink your chances. Quick thinking and self-sufficiency are key.

Who came up with this madness?

TGARR was dreamed up by lifelong adventurers Rich Argentieri and Braden Prickett. Both share a love of competition, water, and ridiculous ideas that somehow turn into reality.

Why race the Mississippi?

It’s America’s greatest water highway—powerful, unpredictable, and full of history. Conquering it in budget boats isn’t just a race, it’s an epic story waiting to be told.

Is TGARR a professional event?

Not even close. This is an amateur, seat-of-your-pants adventure. Think of it as part rally, part endurance test, and part bad idea brought gloriously to life.

Can spectators follow along?

Yes! Teams will share updates, photos, and stories along the way. Expect drama, breakdowns, river lore, and the occasional miracle repair.

How do I sign up?

Stay tuned—the organizers are working on official entry details, rules, and logistics. For now, start hunting for that gem of a boat.
